About This Course

Every data decision starts with one question: what does this data actually say? This course teaches you to answer it. You’ll learn to organize, summarize and describe a data set of one variable, the foundation for everything else in data analytics.

You’ll work with realistic business data throughout: clients’ financial product holdings, salary increases at a multinational, survey ratings and production figures. You’ll learn not just the formulas but which tool fits which data, and the common traps that lead to wrong conclusions.

What you’ll learn:

  • Tell a population from a sample, and a parameter from a statistic
  • Classify any variable: nominal, ordinal, discrete or continuous
  • Use summation notation confidently
  • Build frequency tables, cumulative frequencies and proportions
  • Choose the right chart: pie, bar, histogram or cumulative curve
  • Draw histograms correctly when classes have unequal widths
  • Compute and interpret the mode, median, and arithmetic, geometric and harmonic means
  • Detect skewness and bimodal distributions
  • Find quartiles, deciles and percentiles, and read a box plot
  • Measure spread with the range, interquartile range, variance and standard deviation

Who this course is for:

Professionals who work with numbers, reports and dashboards: finance, management, operations, HR and quality roles.

It suits anyone who needs to summarize data accurately, challenge the figures they’re shown, or build a foundation for probability and inferential statistics.
